Yes they do that all the time after battery change. For their latest model they have abandoned the screw based cap, probably because they kept coming back. In three years time I went through 7 or 8 of the Garmin straps and they all died quickly after a battery change. Garmin kept replacing, but it’s really annoying.

XC ski power is reasonable. It's a lot more jumpy than running. But using 30s averaging it tracks fairly nicely with effort.
Take the battery out and leave it out for a minute or so, or put it back reversed before replacing it the right way. Then try again.
