Every time you leave the city, go do another zone and then come back the merchants get better gear. My 2 main fighters both used 2H weapons, my other 2 used 1h and shields. I tried a number of starting character combo's and both of the initial companions and on the whole I found the elf girl to work out better than the mage.

In terms of content and followers account the first one is way better than river time though, this is the only weak spot of this game imo. Content's hard to say since the story lines / purpose in the 2 are so totally different. The Dark Eye is your straight 'you're the hero' type game and River of Time is more a Political mystery.
